My first experiences in playing around with home automation are resulting in a running framework (basic network for extendibiltiy and integration). I am working with raspberry Pi and Home Assistant as central environment. The operating system is debian based, so it comes with all the debian features.
Home Assistant is a layer on top with a dedicated UI. The image you find online need to be downloaded, moved to an external SD card and pluged into the Raspberry PI. After that you can immediatly start with the configuration.
For me the wohle setup was quite easy. To make live easier for your start I wanted to share some must-readings. Which you will definetly need after the initial setup:
- Setting up Samba (you will need that for making changes in the config files)
- Security / Removing password from main configuration
- Device Tracker Mac address based setup (works with any router)
- Configure static IP for Home Assistant
