Buying a network switch for a home lab or serious home network sounds like a simple task. I was looking for something fairly specific: 16 or 24 ports, managed, from a European vendor, and suitable for a standard 19-inch rack and with a fair price tag?
That combination turned out to be surprisingly difficult to find.
The usual options
Most search results quickly lead to familiar global networking brands. Many make capable equipment, but they do not always match what I was looking for. Some are US-based, some are Asian, and others are sold through European distributors without actually being European vendors.
For a small home network, the requirements are not exotic: VLAN support, a useful web interface, reliable firmware, sensible security options, and enough ports for access points, cameras, servers, smart-home devices, and future experiments.
Why the market feels so limited
Most options are either basic consumer switches or expensive enterprise hardware. The useful middle ground—managed, quiet, rack-mountable, and available from a European vendor—is surprisingly small.
The Allnet option
The ALLNET ALL-SG8324M comes close to my requirements: 24 Gigabit ports, smart management, VLAN and QoS support, a fanless design, and 19-inch rack mounting. It is listed by Reichelt and supplied by ALLNET GmbH Computersysteme in Germany.
What matters to me is not a long list of unnecessary features. It is a sensible device with enough capacity, proper rack mounting, and support for the fundamentals of a serious home network.
Before buying, I would still check firmware support, VLAN behaviour, rack depth, power consumption, warranty handling, and whether PoE is needed. Those details matter more than the logo on the front.
A small lesson in buying network technology from european vendors.
This search was a reminder that “available in Europe” and “European vendor” are not the same thing. The best product is often not the one with the most features, but the one that fits the actual environment and can be supported over time.
For now, the ALLNET ALL-SG8324M is the European option I found that best matches my requirements: 24 ports, managed functionality, fanless operation, 19-inch rack compatibility, and a realistic fit for a serious home network.
Finding it should not have been this hard.
